Volunteer Resident Naturalist 2026-II

The Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon (ASA), a research-focused non-profit organization dedicated to biodiversity conservation in southeastern Peru, is pleased to announce the position of Volunteer Resident Naturalist, beginning June 15, 2026. The successful applicant will be based at Finca Las Piedras, the ASA’s research and education center in Peru’s Madre de Dios region.

 

POSITION: Volunteer Resident Naturalist

LOCATION: Finca Las Piedras, Madre de Dios, Peru

POSITION DURATION: 6 months (June 15-December 11, 2026)

SCHEDULE: 5 days/week, flexibility in scheduling required

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Volunteer Resident Naturalist (VRN) position is intended for recent graduates and other early-career biologists and/or conservationists who seek hands-on experience in tropical field research. VRNs work under the direct supervision of the Lead Naturalist at Finca Las Piedras, and closely with other ASA staff and project leaders, to support the ASA’s research, reforestation, and education efforts in Peru. VRNs are part of the public face of ASA and are part of a dynamic team of researchers, conservation and development professionals, and students from Peru and around the world. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

RESEARCH

VRNs assist in several of the ASA’s long-term biological research projects, including plant phenology monitoring, weekly bird monitoring, and Lepidoptera diversity and biology. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to, daily environmental data collection, project data collection and management, and general assistance to other ASA staff and visiting researchers.

 

REFORESTATION

VRNs support the ASA’s various reforestation and direct conservation initiatives through shade house maintenance, tree planting, and by supporting community-based projects, among others.

 

EDUCATION

VRNs play a supporting role in the ASA’s various education initiatives, including environmental education campaigns with local children, our internship and other professional development programs, and visiting school groups and field courses as needed.

 

OTHER DUTIES

VRNs, as well as all other ASA staff, contribute to day-to-day operations and basic facilities management at Finca Las Piedras. Tasks may include, but are not limited to: preparation and serving of meals, basic cleaning of station facilities, group check-in and orientation, etc.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 6 month commitment

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences or equivalent experience

  • At least intermediate/conversational Spanish

  • Enthusiasm and strong work ethic

  • Flexibility in schedule and work/living environment

  • Maturity (must live and work well with others in a close setting)

  • Excellent physical condition

  • Traveler’s insurance (proof required upon acceptance)

 

TRAINING

Upon arrival at Finca Las Piedras, VRNs undergo an intensive, two-week training period. Training includes an overview of the ASA’s research, reforestation, and education projects, as well as various professional development activities. Training continues informally throughout the duration of the VRNs’ time at Finca Las Piedras.

 

COMPENSATION

This is a volunteer (unpaid) position. However, all room and board is provided on-site at Finca Las Piedras, 7 days per week, for the duration of the appointment (although work is only required 5 days/week). Work-related local transportation, including pickup from the Puerto Maldonado airport (PEM) or bus terminal, is covered. Resident Naturalists are responsible for their international flight to Peru, including airfare, taxes, airport fees, flight insurance, etc.), and domestic air or land travel to Puerto Maldonado (bus or air).

Los RNV trabajan bajo la supervisión directa del residente naturalista líder, así como también con otros miembros del equipo y coordinadores de proyectos, para llevar a cabo proyectos de investigación y monitoreo biológico, y proyectos educativos y de reforestación en Finca Las Piedras, la estación de investigación de ASA en el departamento de Madre de Dios, Perú. RN son parte de un equipo dinámico de investigadores, profesionales en conservación y desarrollo, y estudiantes de todo el mundo. Algunas tareas específicas también incluyen incluyen la colecta de información climática, registro y manejo de datos, y asistencia general a los demás miembros del equipo de ASA así como investigadores visitantes. Reforestación Los RNV contribuyen en las diversas actividades de reforestación y proyectos de conservación directa. Las tareas incluyen mantenimiento del vivero, colocación de plantas en las parcelas de reforestación, creación de biocarbón, entre otros. Proyectos educativos Los RNV también contribuyen en los diversos programas educativos que ASA implementa, incluyendo el proyecto anual de educación ambiental con niñas/os locales, el programa de pasantías internacionales y otros programas de desarrollo profesional, y las visitas educativas a la estación por grupos y cursos. Tareas adicionales Además de lo mencionado anteriormente, los RNV, así como el resto del equipo de ASA, contribuyen con las tareas cotidianas relacionadas a la operación y manejo de la estación. Estas tareas generales incluyen: preparación de comidas y apoyo en el comedor, tareas ligeras de limpieza, orientación y chequeo de grupos, etc. REQUISITOS ·        Compromiso de 6 meses (enero a junio 2026) ·        Grado de bachiller en ciencias biológicas/ambientales o afines. ·        Por lo menos inglés intermedio o a nivel conversacional. ·        Experiencia trabajando o viviendo en los trópicos (preferido). ·        Entusiasmo y una sólida ética para el trabajo. ·        Flexibilidad en horario y ambiente de trabajo. ·        Madurez/debe poder vivir y trabajar bien con otros en un ambiente reducido. ·        Excelente condición física. ·        Seguro de salud/viaje (prueba del seguro será requerida después de aceptación al puesto). INDUCCIÓN Al llegar a Finca Las Piedras, RNV pasan por una semana de intensa inducción. Los RNV aprenderán sobre los proyectos activos de ASA en sus tres áreas focales: Investigación y monitoreo biológico, reforestación, y educación. Los RNV también recibirán entrenamiento informal a lo largo de su tiempo en Finca Las Piedras. COMPENSACIÓN Ésta es una posición voluntaria  (sin retribución económica). Academic Programs Coordinator

We are pleased to announce the position of Academic Programs Coordinator, beginning May 18, 2026. The successful applicant will be based at the ASA’s field site in Peru’s Madre de Dios Department.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Academic Programs Coordinator works closely with ASA academic faculty and staff to facilitate ongoing educational programs, including the Internship and Volunteer Programs, as well as other academic programs as required. The Academic Programs Coordinator is part of the public face of the ASA’s programs in Peru, and is part of a dynamic team of researchers, conservation and development professionals, and students from around the world.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Internship Program
The ASA runs an Internship Program at Finca Las Piedras, which is designed to give those with an interest in tropical biology, reforestation, and/or biodiversity conservation the chance to gain direct, hands-on experience in those domains. The Academic Programs Coordinator is the immediate supervisor and first point of contact for interns staying at Finca Las Piedras, and is responsible for overseeing their activities and managing day-to-day operations regarding the program.
 
Volunteer Program
The Coordinator also oversees participants of the ASA’s Volunteer Program at Finca Las Piedras, and works closely with the Scientific Director to manage day-to-day operations and facilitate the program generally.
  
Other Duties
The Coordinator will also assist other ASA faculty and staff in facilitating other academic programs, including visits from local school groups, national and international university groups, and others.
 
Social Media
The Academic Programs coordinator contributes to outreach efforts on social media. The Coordinator might be asked to create original material regarding ASA’s academic programs for distribution across a variety of platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and blog posts.
 
REQUIREMENTS

  • 4.5 month commitment required

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in natural or environmental sciences, education, or related field

  • Fluency in English (required)

  • At least conversational Spanish (required)

  • Experience working/living abroad, especially in the tropics (preferred)

  • Teaching experience (preferred)

  • Enthusiasm and strong work ethic

  • Flexibility in schedule and work environment

  • Maturity/must live with and work well with others in a close setting

  • Excellent physical condition

  • Traveler’s insurance (proof required upon acceptance)

  • CPR/first aid certification (proof required upon acceptance)

 
TRAINING
Upon arrival at Finca Las Piedras, the successful applicant will undergo an intensive, two-week training period, including an overview of current projects spanning the ASA’s three interrelated focal areas: biological research and monitoring, sustainable tropical agriculture, and community engagement and education, as well as the methodologies used for research and outreach work in those areas. The coordinator will be supervised and trained informally throughout the duration of their term at Finca Las Piedras.
 
COMPENSATION
Monthly salary is USD $1,000/month. Room and board is also provided on-site at Finca Las Piedras, 7 days per week, for the duration of the appointment (although work is only required M-F). Work-related local transportation, including pickup from the Puerto Maldonado airport (PEM) or bus terminal, is covered. The applicant is responsible for their international flight to Peru, including airfare, taxes, airport fees, flight insurance, etc., and domestic air or land travel to Puerto Maldonado. An additional stipend of up to $800 will be provided to help cover costs related to international airfare.
